So this year ends with the death of a young girl who was gang raped and beaten in Delhi. In a country that is now seen globally as a progressive country it is devastating to know that a woman is raped every fourteen hours (and they are the ones that are reported).
That these men had the temerity to do this vile act leads to the bigger issues; the need to change social attitudes and corruption that permeates every corner of the country. I was in India this year and I saw corruption firsthand everywhere I went whether it was to park a car or to gain entry to a tourist site, it is like a cancer and seems insurmountable to conquer in a country of over billion people. But that this particular case of sexual violence has initiated a national movement gives me hope that something anything will be done.
With a new year dawning and resolutions being made…this girl cannot and should not have died for nothing. I keep thinking what would Gandhiji say – I feel his heartache because my heart aches too.
